Get a Thorough Understanding of Oneself
In all one's life time it is oneself that one spends the most time being with or dealing with. But it is precisely oneself that one has the least understanding of.
When you are going upwards in life you tend to overestimate yourself. It seems that everything you seek for is within your reach; luck and opportunities will come your way and you are overjoyed that they constitute part of your worth. When you are going downhill you tend to underestimate yourself, mistaking difficulties and adversities for your own incompetence. It’s likely that you think it wise for yourself to know your place and stay aloof from worldly wearing a mask of cowardice, behind which the flow of sap in your life will be retarded.
To get a thorough understanding of oneself is to gain a correct view of oneself and be a sober realist -- aware of both one’s strength and shortage. You may look forward hopefully to the future but be sure not to expect too much, for ideals can never be fully realized. You may be courageous to meet challenges but it should be clear to you where to direct your efforts. That’s to way so long as you have a perfect knowledge of yourself there won’t be difficulties you can’t overcome, nor obstacles you can’t surmount.
To get a thorough understanding of oneself needs selfappreciation. Whether you liken yourself to a towering tree or a blade of grass, whether you think you are a high mountain or a small stone, you represent a state of nature that has its own raison deter. If you earnestly admire yourself you’ll have a real sense of self-appreciation, which will give you confidence. As soon as you gain full confidence in yourself you’ll be enabled to fight and overcome any adversity.
To get a thorough understanding of oneself also requires doing oneself a favor when it’s needed. In time of anger, do yourself a favor by giving vent to it in a quiet place so that you won't be hurt by its flames; in time of sadness, do yourself a favor by sharing it with your friends so as to change a gloomy mood into a cheerful one; in time of tiredness, do yourself a favor by getting a good sleep or taking some tonic. Show yourself loving concern about your health and daily life. As you are aware, what a person physically has is but a human body that’s vulnerable when exposed to the elements. So if you fall ill, it’s up to you to take a good care of yourself. Unless you know perfectly well when and how to do yourself a favor, you won’t be confident and ready enough to resist the attack of illness.
To get a thorough understanding of oneself is to get a full control of one’s life. Then one will find one’s life full of color and flavor。

There is one language that is in use in every country in the world. The people who use it are young and old, thin and fat, short and tall. It is everybody's second language. It is easy to understand, although you can not hear it. It is sign language.
When you wave to a friend who is across the street, you are using sign language. When you smile at someone, you are saying, "I want to be friendly." but you are not using speech. You are using sign language. When you raise your hand in class, you are saying, "Please ask me. I think I know the correct answer."
Babies who can not talk can point at things. They are using sign language. A policeman who wants to stop traffic holds up his hand. He is using sign language. Winston Churchill's famous "V-for-Victory" was sign language, too.
Many years ago, a French priest, Charles Michel de l'Epee, became interested in education for deaf people. He invented a finger alphabet. It is still in use. People can make signs for letters and spell words with their hands, and deaf people can read and understand them.

Your vacation doesnt have to be dead time when it comes to self-improvement.
You can boost your skills while relaxing and de-stressing.
In other words, your vacation can be a great time to improve your emotional intelligenceand still thoroughly remain in vacation mode.
Since thats one of the most important job skills on the market right now, its worth taking a page or two from the most emotionally intelligent vacationers play books.
1. THEY USE THE TIME TO SELF-REFLECT
As the pace of things slackens, ask yourself:
What kind of people irritate me
What kind of people am I drawn to
Who do these people remind me of
Being in a laid back, relaxed state is an excellent time to do some self-reflection.
So sure, have a cocktail or dive into a book, but carve out some time just to be alone with your thoughts.
2. THEY LOOK FOR WAYS TO EMPATHIZE
Most people do this in their own heads anyway when theyre traveling overseas or someplace unfamiliar.
Notice people and their facial expressions, their posture, dress, and manner of walkingthese are all great ways to gather clues about whats going on with them.
In fact, you can assume this mind-set even when youre going to a movie, out to eat, or to a live performance.
3. THEY PRACTICE POLITE ASSERTIVENESS
Many people struggle with asking for what they want.
Emotionally intelligent people realize that the worst that can happen is getting a no, in which case theyre no worse off than before asking for something they want.
You might think of the boardroom as the real place to be more assertive, but vacation is actually just as good a time to stretch your asking muscles.
When you check into your accommodation, try asking for an upgrade. If theres a problem with your meal, tell the server.
Just be polite.
Because you often wont see the people youre dealing with again, it may be easier to ask for what you want.
4. THEY RECONSIDER THEIR GOALS
Vacations are a great time to revisit past goals or even set new ones.
When youre away from your everyday routine, youre better positioned to take a look at where you are in life and contemplate where youd like to be.
Those who get high scores for emotional intelligence are usually pretty good at getting away from their daily habits now and then in order to refocus and take an inventory of their lives.
5. THEY IMPROVE THEIR RESILIENCE HABITS
While you might like to tell yourself that next month youll finally start meditating daily or picking up a journaling routine, life often gets in the way.
Emotionally intelligent people arent immune to this, but theyre good at using vacation time to retool those resilience strategies.
Vacations give us a chance to return to what we know we should be doing for ourselves but dont often make time for.
1. Mental Stimulation
Studies have shown that staying mentally stimulated can slow the progress of (or possibly even prevent) Alzheimer’s and Dementia, since keeping your brain active and engaged prevents it from losing power. Just like any other muscle in the body, the brain requires exercise to keep it strong and healthy, so the phrase “use it or lose it” is particularly apt when it comes to your mind. Doing puzzles and playing games such as chess have also been found to be helpful with cognitive stimulation.
2. Stress Reduction
No matter how much stress you have at work, in your personal relationships, or countless other issues faced in daily life, it all just slips away when you lose yourself in a great story. A well-written novel can transport you to other realms, while an engaging article will distract you and keep you in the present moment, letting tensions drain away and allowing you to relax.
3. Knowledge
知識
Everything you read fills your head with new bits of information, and you never know when it might come in handy. The more knowledge you have, the better-equipped you are to tackle any challenge you’ll ever face.
Additionally, here’s a bit of food for thought: should you ever find yourself in dire circumstances, remember that although you might lose everything else—your job, your possessions, your money, even your health—knowledge can never be taken from you.
4.Vocabulary Expansion
This goes with the above topic: the more you read, the more words you gain exposure to, and they’ll inevitably make their way into your everyday vocabulary. Being articulate and well-spoken is of great help in any profession, and knowing that you can speak to higher-ups with self-confidence can be an enormous boost to your self-esteem. It could even aid in your career, as those who are well-read, well-spoken, and knowledgeable on a variety of topics tend to get promotions more quickly (and more often) than those with smaller vocabularies and lack of awareness of literature, scientific breakthroughs, and global events.
Reading books is also vital for learning new languages, as non-native speakers gain exposure to words used in context, which will ameliorate their own speaking and writing fluency.
Happiness is like a pebble dropped into a pool to set in motion an ever—widening circle of ripples。 As Stevenson has said, being happy is a duty。
There is no exact definition of the word happiness。 Happy people are happy for all sorts of reasons。 The key is not wealth or physical well—being, since we find beggars, invalids and so—called failures, who are extremely happy。
Being happy is a sort of unexpected dividend。 But staying happy is an accomplishment, a triumph of soul and character。 It is not selfish to strive for it。 It is, indeed, a duty to ourselves and others。
Being unhappy is like an infectious disease。 It causes people to shrink away from the sufferer。 He soon finds himself alone, miserable and embittered。 There is, however, a cure so simple as to seem, at first glance, ridiculous; if you don’t feel happy, pretend to be!
It works。 Before long you will find that instead of repelling people, you attract them。 You discover how deeply rewarding it is to be the center of wider and wider circles of good will。
Then the make—believe becomes a reality。 You possess the secret of peace of mind, and can forget yourself in being of service to others。
Being happy, once it is realized as a duty and established as a habit, opens doors into unimaginable gardens thronged with grateful friends。
Ladies and Gentlemen, Dear Colleagues:
Because I am the Vice-Chancellor of the oldest of the foreign universities represented here today, I have been chosen to speak on their behalf. Our universities form a great intellectual community round the world. Science has no nationality; knowledge belongs to everyone.
Our universities creat new knowledge. They teah this knowledge, together with that of other universities and also the best of the great storehouse of knowledge, which those who came before us have uncovered, tested and accumulated.
All universities contibute to the prosperity and success of their country. They also conserve the culture and inheritance specific to their country's civization. But, they do more. Knowledge is secure only when it is hard won by the independent tests of accuracy, rational explanation and ture. So, when we teach our students skills, we also give them values. On the one side, these are values for personal and civic conduct. On the other side, these values underwrite the personal need for independent understanding which is the source of human creativity.
These duties give universities a high responsibility. They are rooted in a great and fine tradition of honesty. university is a beacon of light in its own society and, by its association with its sisters, its knowledge and its values are spread wide.
A tradition is not built easily ir quickly. During one hundred years, Peking University has been fashioning its tradition. Present and future members of the University! We hope to see you elaborate and consolidate your tradition. We hope to see you become a keystone of the intellectual community. In your next century, we hope to see you contribute to the international academic movement as a whole, as more and more of you numbers come to paticipate in the activities of your sister universities.
Congratulations, Peking University on your first century of achievement

Chinese Undergraduates in the US
Each year, elite American universities and liberal arts colleges, such as Yale, Harvard, Columbia, Amherst and Wellesley, offer a number of scholarships to Chinese high school graduates to study in their undergraduate programs.
Four years ago, I received such a scholarship from Yale.
What are these Chinese undergrads like? Most come from middle-class families in the big urban centers of China.
The geographical distribution is highly skewed, with Shanghai and Beijing heavily over-represented.
Outside the main pool, a number of Yale students come from Changsha and Ningbo, swhereseach year American Yale graduates are sent to teach English.
The overwhelming majority of Chinese undergraduates in the US major in science, engineering or economics.
Many were academic superstars in their high schools - gold medallists in international academic Olympiads or prize winners in national academic contests.
Once on US campuses, many of them decide to make research a lifelong commitment.
Life outside the classroom constitutes an important part of college life.
At American universities the average student spends less than thirteen hours a week in class.
Many Chinese students use their spare time to pick up some extra pocket money.
At Yale, one of the most common campus jobs is washing dishes in the dining halls.
Virtually all Chinese undergraduates at Yale work part-time in the dining halls at some point in their college years.
As they grow in age and sophistication, they upgrade to better-paying and less stressful positions.
The more popular and interesting jobs include working as a computer assistant, math homework grader, investment office assistant and lab or research assistant.
The latter three often lead to stimulating summer jobs.
Student activities are another prominent feature of American college life.
Each week there are countless student-organized events of all sorts - athletic, artistic, cultural, political or social (i.e.just for fun).
New student organizations are constantly being created, and Chinese undergrads contribute to this ferment.
Sport looms much larger on US campuses than in China.
At Yale, intramural sports from soccer to water polo take place all year long; hence athletic talent is a real social asset.
One of the Chinese students at Yale several years ago was a versatile sportsman.
His athletic talents and enthusiastic participation in sporting events, combined with his other fine qualities, made him a popular figure in his residential college.

The fortunate people in the world—the only reallyfortunate people in the world, in my mind, are those whose work is also their pleasure. The class is not a large one, not nearly so large as it is often represented to be; and authors are perhaps one of the most important elements in its composition. They enjoy in this respect at least a real harmony of life.
To my mind, to be able to make your work your pleasure is the one class distinction in the world worth striving for; and I do not wonder that others are inclined to envy those happy human beings who find their livelihood in the gay effusions of their fancy, to whom every hour of labour is an hour of enjoyment, to whom repose—however necessary—is a tiresome interlude. And even a holiday is almost deprivation.
Whether a man writes well or ill, has much to say or little, if he cares aboutwriting at all, he will appreciate the pleasures of composition. To sit at one's table on a sunny morning, with four clear hours of uninterruptible security, plenty of nice white paper, and a Squeezer pen—that is true happiness.
The complete absorption of the mind upon an agreeable occupation—what more is there than that to desire? What does it matter what happens outside? The House of Commons may do what it likes, and so may the House of Lords. The heathen may rage furiously in every part of the globe.
The bottom may be knocked clean out of the American market. Consols may fall and suffragettes may rise. Nevermind, for four hours, at any rate, we will withdraw ourselves from a common, ill-governed, and disorderly world, and with the key of fancy unlock that cupboard where all the good things of the infinite are put away.

If you wish good advice, consult an old man
In the Spring and Autumn Period, Duke Huan of Qi led an army to attack a small state in the north.
They went in spring when green grass covered the ground.
But when they came back it was winter.Everywhere was white with snow and the wind was howling. The troops lost their way.
While everybody was worrying, Guan Zhong, the duke's chief minister, suggested: 'An old horse may know the way.'
So the duke ordered several old horse to be selected to lead the army. Finally, they found the way back home.

Yiyang distance to go now for a month, even if it still can not find their own satisfaction that four days to record your feelings accompanied me time, perhaps rough speech, because of you, in my mind it is the most beautiful story. I said give all of you the next chapter.
Understanding your first 41 days, I swore off all sensible idea, put on a single word to make my sincere letter, the selection of a gift wrapped my deep tenderness, embarked on a train destined for Yiyang , duty-bound in love for the first time chose to be wearing armor of the brave. You probably never know, paranoid view of love in my modesty and pride, but I met you, we are all collapse if there is another new self. You bring me the beam of light, so clever, just shines into my heart the most cold corner. Since then, a red-hot.
April 2, after a long shaking all night and drink a few saliva, ear snoring after another sleepless night endured torture, finally arrived, a small platform to usher in the warmth of your eyes, my heart full of grievances, than this city I imagine the more desolate. "Tired?" You ask me, did not answer, silently holding your hand, rely on the power of your body, walking in this strange city, although tired but the end result of you are so relieved.
That morning, I resist the full is sleepy, listening to tell you miss lightly in my ear, along with "I love you" in the name, and you wear a necklace for me personally, a love one and not the same, has long been clear, I feel I should be long past the age sweet captured, but that moment still feel happy mess. Always wanted to be a special woman, always want to have an extraordinary experience and love the plot, but be careful when produce throbbing, suddenly found the most simple moving enough soul-stirring.
April, always rainy season. Newcomers unfamiliar to us can only wander aimlessly hanging around in the streets, most of the time to be bored to walk, no fame, no snacks, and even the so-called downtowwn street far "beyond" my expectations, really tired then find a place to eat some random point to sit down and rest, we even went to Internet cafes, you play the game, I go to bed. Unusually dull, there is fatigue, they will complain, but our mutual interlocking fingers, I am also deeply satisfied. Accompany and help you pick the color of clothes, shoes and styles for your reference, to discuss the location of accommodation, hazy rain you as I hold the umbrella, when I put a chill swept coat, placid warm my heart to heal the remnants of the city disappointed.
Holidays fleeting, eventually usher respectively, without the slightest sadness, we have each quiet smile and said goodbye sentence, I went straight to the abnormal strong, suddenly walked into the wicket, to be suddenly turned your face already It is blocked out of my sight. Miss an instant flood burst!
I have many times in the past I would look forward to the future to meet the kind of person, what kind of story happens, you deviate from my original all fantasy, but no regrets. True love can not extricate themselves in love probably is a great contrast with their mate choice criteria person! After a number means the situation around long before the achievements of this contented encounter, how lucky, finally, are you!

All horses to participate in the 2008 Olympic Games will have to go through quarantine before and after entering Hong Kong, the venue of the events.
The official in charge of the work said the purpose of the process is to ensure health for the horses.
The horses are subject to one-week quarantine in six quarantine centers located in North America, Europe and Oceania (Australia and New Zealand), according to an arrangement made between a Hong Kong agency, the International Equestrian Federation and the World Organization for Animal Health. Only those horses with health certificates are qualified for the competition.
Internationally recognized experts will make body temperature, blood and urine checkups to make sure the horses are not infected by any epidemic diseases.
After entering Hong Kong, the horses will again go through a 10-day quarantine to avoid contact with local horses and infection by any diseases. The Hong Kong authorities will provide each horse with a single shed. There are five stables, each containing over 50 such sheds. Medical services will be on hand for each stable. Serious cases can be treated at a Hong Kong horse hospital.
The participating horses are usually accompanied and taken care of by their own boys. However, Hong Kong is ready to provide such services if needed.
The horses, if in healthy condition, can conduct training at their respective stables during the quarantine period. In addition, they can take training for another week before participating in the Olympic competition.

It is a commonplace among moralists that you cannot get happiness by pursuing it. This is only true if you pursue it unwisely. Gamblers at Monte Carlo are pursuing money, and most of them lose it instead, but there are other ways of pursuing money, which often succeed. So it is with happiness. If you pursue it by means of drink, you are forgetting the hangover.
Epicurus pursued it by living only in congenial society and eating only dry bread, supplemented by a little cheese on feast days. His method proved successful in his case, but he was a valetudinarian, and most people would need something more vigorous.
For most people, the pursuit of happiness, unless supplemented in various ways, is too abstract and theoretical to be adequate as a personal rule of life. But I think that whatever personal rule of life you may choose it should not, except in rare and heroic cases, be incompatible with happiness. If you look around at the men and women whom you can call happy, will see that they all have certain things in common. The most important of these things is an activity which at most gradually builds up something that you are glad to see coming into existence.
Women who take an instinctive pleasure in their children can get this kind of satisfaction out of bringing up a family. Artists and authors and men of science get happiness in this way if their own work seems good to them. But there are many humbler forms of the same kind of pleasure. Many men who spend their working life in the city devote their weekends to voluntary and unremunerated toil in their gardens, and when the spring comes, they experience all the joys of having created beauty.
The whole subject of happiness has, in my opinion, been treated too solemnly. It had been thought that man cannot be happy without a theory of life or a religion. Perhaps those who have been rendered unhappy by a bad theory may need a better theory to help them to recover, just as you may need a tonic when you have been ill. But when things are normal a man should be healthy ]without a tonic and happy without a theory. It is the simple things that really matter.
If a man delights in his wife and children, has success in work, and finds pleasure in the alternation of day and night, spring and autumn, he will be happy whatever his philosophy may be. If, on the other hand, he finds his wife fateful, his children’s noise unendurable, and the office a nightmare; if in the daytime he longs for night, and at night sighs for the light of day, then what he needs is not a new philosophy but a new regimen—a different diet, or more exercise, or what not.
Man is an animal, and his happiness depends on his physiology more than he likes to think. This is a humble conclusion, but I cannot make myself disbelieve it. Unhappy businessmen, I am would increase their happiness more by walking six miles every day than by any conceivable change of philosophy.
